Two-Stepping Basics

Two-step truck washing uses two different chemicals in sequence to loosen road film, dirt, and grime so they can be rinsed away with minimal brushing.

The basic process is simple: Step 1 → Step 2 → rinse. Step 2 goes directly over Step 1 without rinsing between them.

Why use two different chemicals?

Each step has a job.

Step 1 is a low-pH chemical. It helps remove mineral deposits, oxidation, and buildup.

Step 2 is a high-pH soap and degreaser. It targets oily road grime, grease, bugs, and other buildup.

Applied in sequence, the two chemicals work together on the vehicle’s surface to release contamination. The rinse removes the loosened dirt and chemical residue.

Does two-stepping mean you never need a brush?

No. Two-stepping reduces brushing, but it doesn’t make every surface or every type of buildup a touchless job.

Heavy buildup, neglected surfaces, and certain problem areas may still need extra attention. If brushing is needed, brush after applying Step 2, then rinse. Results also depend on your chemical choice, dilution, equipment, water quality, surface temperature, and application technique.

If a truck isn’t coming clean, the answer isn’t automatically stronger soap. Check the setup and process first.

Which chemical bundle should you use?

Choose for the surfaces you’re washing. Our chemical bundle comparison covers the differences in more detail.

Venom + Viper Bundle

Polish safe

If there’s any polished aluminum on the vehicle, choose Venom + Viper. Venom is Step 1; Viper is Step 2.

Bullet + Trigger Bundle

Not polish safe

Our stronger bundle for heavy oxidation and stubborn buildup on suitable non-polished surfaces. Bullet is Step 1; Trigger is Step 2. Do not use this bundle on polished aluminum.

What equipment do you need?

You need a pressure washer and a compatible way to apply each chemical separately, followed by a thorough rinse.

Our EZ 2-Step Injector Kit is the introductory option. Our Pro 2-Step System is the step up for operators looking to reduce switching time and improve workflow.

Compare the setups in our EZ 2-Step vs. Pro 2-Step guide.

Can you mix Step 1 and Step 2 together?

No. Keep Step 1 and Step 2 in separate containers. Apply Step 1, then apply Step 2 directly over it on the vehicle before rinsing.

Dilute each chemical concentrate separately with water to prepare it for downstreaming. Do not combine Step 1 and Step 2 in the same container. They need to be applied separately, in sequence, to work together on the vehicle’s surface.

Follow the mixing and application instructions for your chemical bundle and equipment.
